The Adirondack Carousel
- The Hermit Thrush

The Adirondack Carousel is a new carousel being built in Saranac lake , NY. The carousel will feature a variety of full size carved wooden animals. All of the species featured are native to the Adirondack region.
I have been asked to carve the Hermit Thrush. Below is a drawing of the Hermit Thrush as I pictured it. As I work on it, I will post pictures showing its progress from concept to finished piece.
After the initial drawing it was decided that the legs might interfere with the pole or break easily. I created a small clay model to work out the new leg position.

With this new model approved it was time to buy the wood and create the body blank. The next few pictures show the construction of the body blank (and a couple of pesky visitors who thought that racing back & forth through the bird's belly was great fun!)
Here I've started to rough out the body and remove some of the extra bulk.
I've started carving some of the features.
